Health

Goal: Children and adults in Washington County are physically, mentally, and emotionally healthy.

FOCUS AREAS

  • Reducing rates of substance abuse through prevention, education and treatment

  • Increasing awareness and access to mental health services

  • Supporting life-long healthy choices

As the World Health Organization puts it, “Health is a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being, and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity.” Good health is fundamental to our capacity to enjoy life, provide for our families, realize our dreams and contribute to our community.

U.S. businesses lose more than $1 trillion a year in productivity due to chronic illness. In addition, Washington County is facing a drug epidemic and young people are struggling to find resources for mental health.

United Way of Washington County is working to address the root causes of these issues. We engaged in community conversations and meetings with local leaders in the healthcare field to understand which health issues are most important to Washington County.

In 2021, we achieved the following results to advance the health of all Washington County residents:

  • 95% of high school students use of any alcohol, tobacco or drug products declined as a result of participating in a prevention program.
  • 91% of youth in counseling reported improvement in their ability to cope with life stressors.
  • 75% of clients without housing reported having connected with a community resource for assistance to move to permanent housing.

Together, we are making Washington County a healthier, more vibrant community!
