UNITED WAY PARTNERSHIP HELPS LOCAL RESIDENTS SAVE $93,239 ON PRESCRIPTION DRUG COSTS

According to the Centers for Disease Control, nearly one in 10 American adults don't take their medications as prescribed, simply because they can't afford them. The consequences of non-adherence include worsening medical condition, increased health care costs, and even death. That’s why United Way of Washington County is working to ensure everyone in our community can afford the prescription medications they need.

United Way partners with a national organization called FamilyWize to provide the community with free prescription discount cards. Last year alone, local residents saved more than $93,239 on prescription drug costs by using the FamilyWize discount card.

“No one should be forced to choose between buying food, paying rent, or having the medicine they need. That’s why we partnered with FamilyWize,” said Kristin Brandner, Executive Director of United Way of Washington County. “United Way is working to improve community conditions in measurable and lasting ways, and good health is key to ensuring a good quality of life for all.”

The FamilyWize card lowers the cost of prescriptions by an average of 40% or more and it’s accepted at 95% of pharmacies nationwide. The cards can be used by anyone who lacks insurance or to lower the cost of a prescription that is not covered by an insurance plan. The cards are available at the United Way office in West Bend and at the United Way Resource Center in Hartford. They are also available online at www.familywize.org/card.
