JOHN DUWELL RECEIVES UNITED WAY VOLUNTEER LEADERSHIP AWARD

United Way of Washington County presented John Duwell with the Clifford A. & Elizabeth M. Nelson Volunteer Leadership Award at the Champions of Change volunteer awards event on June 15.

United Way’s Volunteer Leadership Award was created to recognize an individual in Washington County who has demonstrated community leadership and a long-term commitment to volunteering. The award is named in honor of the late Cliff Nelson and his wife Betty, who are known for their outstanding volunteer efforts on behalf of human service, civic, and arts organizations. Each year, past Nelson Award winners nominate and select a new recipient.

“United Way has a legacy of bringing people together to improve lives and community conditions,” said Kristin Brandner, Executive Director of United Way of Washington County. “This award celebrates leaders in our community who do just that. It honors volunteers who have spent a lifetime giving their time and talents to make a lasting impact in Washington County.”

“John Duwell is so deserving of this award given his extensive volunteerism over decades in Washington County,” Brandner said. “He truly exemplifies excellence and our community is a better place because of his contributions.”

Duwell has been an active volunteer for more than 30 years. He has spent countless hours working to champion community health, economic development, religion, youth, and the environment.

Although he has supported many different causes, Duwell has advocated for education throughout his life. He was a long-time member of the West Bend School Board, serving a total of 10 years during two tenures. Additionally, he served on the board for Big Brothers Big Sisters of Washington County and West Bend Public Schools Foundation.

Former West Bend Superintendent Pat Herdrich spoke of Duwell’s school board service, saying, "John's selfless dedication was focused on ensuring each decision was made with the students in mind. His commitment was endless. John’s an outstanding steward to the community."

Duwell currently volunteers in leadership positions at St. Paul’s UCC Church, West Bend COLUMNS, and West Bend Community Foundation.

Additionally, Duwell has volunteered for St. Joseph’s Community Hospital, West Bend Chamber of Commerce, West Bend Beautification Committee, West Bend Redevelopment Authority, Wisconsin Insurance Alliance, Wisconsin Property and Casualty Advisory Council, and the American Cancer Society.
