12/16/11 PRESS RELEASE: December Campaign Update
With only a few weeks of fundraising left in this year’s United Way campaign, $906,000 has been raised to date and is just 20% shy of its $1,125,000 goal. As United Way enters the crucial final few weeks of the campaign, it still needs more than $200,000 to reach goal. A strong final push is needed to ensure that adequate help is available for local families, children and seniors in need throughout Washington County.
"Our United Way campaign has made great strides in donations this year, but we still have a ways to go before meeting our 2011 goal of $1,125,000," explained Michael Laird, 2011 United Way Campaign Chair and Froedtert Health St. Joseph's Hospital President/CEO. "The donations raised this year will benefit over 30 programs that will impact over 30,000 families in our community. Without your help this year, there will be fewer funds available to meet the critical needs within Washington County."
"We know these are tough times for everyone," stated Kristin Brandner, United Way Executive Director. "United Way partner agencies are relying on us and the generosity of this community to help during this time of great need. United Way funded programs saw over a 15% increase in services provided from 2009 to 2010, and we know the needs continue to grow."
"Washington County residents are the most thoughtful, caring and impactful group of people determined to make a difference in their communities," continued Laird. "This is the perfect opportunity for you to make a difference in the life of a child, a family or even a neighbor this year. If you are able to help, consider increasing your donation from last year, if you haven't donated to United Way before, please consider a gift of $75. Seventy-five dollars would not only enter you into a give-a-way for a new car, it would also purchase 25 comfort kits for victims of disaster, provide 3-hours of art therapy for a child affected by violence at home, or provide one home visit with a speech, occupational or physical therapist to a child born with developmental delays."
Donations can be sent directly to United Way of Washington County at P.O. Box 304, West Bend, WI 53095. You can also donate online at the United Way website, unitedwayofwashingtoncounty.org or by phone at 262-338-3821.

3/8/11 PRESS RELEASE: What Federal Funding Will Washington County Receive?
As part of their plan to curb spending, Congress has targeted a 50% reduction in funding for emergency food and shelter programs in 2011. In 2010 the United States Congress appropriated $200 million nationally to supplement and expand emergency food and shelter programs. This was in response to the increased rate of joblessness that resulted in people becoming, or at risk of becoming, homeless. Washington County received $88,936 of these funds.
Since the 2011 Federal budget has not yet been passed, no decision has been made as to what funding will be available for emergency food and shelter programs this year. It is also not known how much funding Washington County will receive under the Emergency Food and Shelter Program (EFSP). Funding awards will be based on the total number of unemployed and people in poverty in the county as compared to other jurisdictions.
Any funds awarded will be distributed to qualifying agencies that apply for funding. In 2010 funding priority was giving to programs that provided rent and utility payment assistance to eligible individuals and mass shelter.
Public or private voluntary agencies interested in applying for Emergency Food and Shelter Program funds should contact Karin Westerlund, at the United Way of Washington County office, (262) 338-3821, by Thursday, March 31st.

2/8/11 PRESS RELEASE: United Way Looking for a Few Good Volunteers
Each year the United Way of Washington County uses adult volunteers who live or work in the county to help allocate the funds raised during its annual campaign.
"We're looking for 24 committed volunteers who live or work in our county and have a genuine interest in improving the lives of people," explained Karin Westerlund, United Way Community Impact Coordinator. "Good candidates would be people who have some experience with non-profit programming or have an idea of the community's needs. They also must have some free time or a flexible work schedule because there will be 5 to 8 half-day panel meetings during the business day in April and May."
Each volunteer is assigned to a panel that reviews programs in one of United Way's four impact areas: 1) Supporting People in Crisis, 2) Strengthening Families & Communities, 3) Developing Successful Children & Youth, and 4) Promoting Self-Sufficiency.
"It is through local volunteers that United Way allocation decisions are made," continued Karin. "Their careful review of our partner agency programs ensures accountability and that donor pledges make an impact for those in need in our community."
To volunteer to be on a United Way panel, call the United Way office at (262) 338-3821.

1/13/11 PRESS RELEASE: 2010 Campaign Exceeds Goal!
"For the second year in a row United Way exceeded its campaign goal because of generous donors and dedicated campaign volunteers," stated Ric Leitheiser, M&I Community Bank President and the United Way of Washington County's 2010 Campaign Chair. "This is not just about the money raised but it is a message about the needs in the community. I am very proud and amazed of the generosity in this community. The work that is done to help agencies provide needed program services is just amazing."
On January 12th over 100 community leaders met at West Bend Mutual Insurance's Prairie Center to celebrate the results of the 2010 United Way campaign.
In a short skit, Girl Scouts for Hartford Troop 2264 cheered for the great leadership provided by Campaign Chair Super Heroes Ric Leitheiser and Michael Laird and for the Division Leaders and Loaned Executives that helped make the campaign a success.
"People in Washington County understood and responded to the growing need for services during this tough economic period," continued Ric. "Because of their generosity, citizens of Washington County will have critical needs met and better lives in 2011 through the services offered by the 21 United Way partner agencies."
One new campaign incentive in 2010 was a Mayors Challenge between the cities of West Bend and Hartford. If West Bend city employees donated the most money to United Way, Hartford Mayor Dautermann would have to stack books at the West Bend Community Memorial Library. If Hartford city employees donated the most money, West Bend Mayor Deiss would have to read books to the children at the Hartford Public Library.
"2011 will be another challenging year because the needs in Washington County are not getting smaller – they are growing," declared Michael. "Supporting a community in need is what United Way is all about. As we build on the tradition of the strong, past United Way leaders, I challenge each of you to get even more involved this year to help make a critical difference in Washington County."
